Project Description

The Sawa Cookstoves Project is a sustainability initiative to address deforestation and indoor air pollution in Cameroon's Central Region. The project aims to improve the livelihoods of local communities by providing them with energy-efficient cookstoves that reduce the negative health impacts associated with cooking with wood or charcoal, disproportionately affecting women and children. The project also supports afforestation efforts, restores nature, and improves overall sustainability in the region.

Impact on local communities

The project has a profound positive impact on local communities. The negative health impacts of cooking with wood or charcoal disproportionately affecting women and children are felt by millions globally. Household air pollution from these practices causing respiratory diseases results in a premature mortality rate of an estimated four million people annually. The efficient cookstoves decrease the amount of firewood needed, decreasing the negative health impacts on families. It also saves time and disposable income for local communities, as they no longer have to spend as much time and resources gathering firewood. The stoves are also locally made, offering many job opportunities and ensuring they suit the local communities’ needs.

The project is further designed to have a positive impact on the environment and address deforestation. The cookstoves are highly efficient, significantly reducing the need for firewood and thus decreasing the pressure on natural resources and forests. Additionally, the project supports afforestation efforts, improving overall sustainability in the region, preserving biodiversity, and protecting the ecosystem services the forests provide.

About this region

The project is developed in Cameroon's Central Region, a French-speaking, densely populated region occupying 69,000 square kilometres. With an increasing population, the region faces a growing problem of deforestation, driven by the over-exploitation of natural resources and firewood collection activities, which is causing negative impacts on the environment and the health and livelihoods of the local population.

Article 6 of the Paris Agreement

In the context of international carbon markets and the Paris Agreement, Cameroon currently does not have finalised national legislation corresponding with the internationally established Article 6 framework. Cameroon is formulating its approach and structure for Article 6 and its broader implications, with us, as stakeholders, actively engaging with the government to guide policy development.
