Project overview

The Bulindi Agroforestry and Chimpanzee Conservation Project is a Green Earth initiative across the Hoima and Masindi Districts of western Uganda that restores chimpanzee habitat while supporting smallholder farmers in transitioning to agroforestry. The project works with local farming communities to plant diverse, sustainable tree species that improve livelihoods, restore biodiversity, and protect endangered chimpanzees.

At the heart of the project sits the Mwani clonal coffee nursery, a “mother garden” that propagates seedlings bred to resist Coffee Wilt Disease and other long-standing threats to coffee farming in the region. Farmers integrate the new coffee plants into agroforestry plots alongside Caliandra, banana, and indigenous trees, with bamboo and elephant grass as living fences. The result is a working canopy that delivers habitat, shade, and a stronger commodity crop on the same hectare.

The project has expanded across western Uganda in recent years and has featured in international wildlife documentary work. Communities benefit from the seedlings, the agronomic training, and the long-term income that follows verified credit issuance, while the chimpanzees regain the forest corridors that connect their remaining habitat.

Community benefits

Human-wildlife conflict mitigation: Forest enrichment planting replenishes natural foods for chimpanzees, effectively reducing crop-raiding incidents.
Educational support: The project sponsors the education of schoolchildren from families who actively conserve natural forest fragments on their land.
Clean water access: The initiative funds the construction of village boreholes, providing thousands of residents with direct access to clean water.

Environmental and biodiversity benefits

Carbon capture: The project aims to capture an estimated 4.8 million tonnes of CO₂ over its lifetime through extensive afforestation.
Primate habitat expansion: The initiative directly protects the shrinking habitat of over 300 wild chimpanzees in the Budongo–Bugoma Corridor.
Deforestation reduction: By establishing sustainable woodlots, the project reduces local reliance on native forests for timber and firewood.
