Project overview

The Green Earth Sauki Cookstove Nigeria Project distributes improved fuel-efficient cookstoves to households in Nigeria, replacing traditional three-stone fires and inefficient stoves that burn larger quantities of wood and produce significant indoor air pollution. The project sits alongside our other cookstove programmes in East and West Africa.

The efficient stoves reduce the firewood households need to cook the same meals, easing pressure on local forests and lowering indoor smoke that disproportionately affects women and children. Field tests, including a recent kitchen performance test in the field, have measured the fuel savings per household, with the results feeding into both the project's emissions accounting and its community-impact reporting.

The project is implemented through local consultations and partnerships in Nigeria, including Niger and Nasarawa States. Local distribution, training, and follow-up support ensure the stoves stay in use over time. Carbon revenue helps fund continued supply, replacement parts, and the household-level support that keeps the stoves in service.

  • Forest conservation: By requiring significantly less fuel than traditional open fires, the project reduces the pressure on forests across Nasarawa and Niger States.
  • Improved air quality: The clean-burning technology drastically reduces household smoke and harmful particulate matter emissions.
