Regenerative Agroforestry Project Cameroon
- Project type ARR
- Location Cameroon
- Project ID Verra: 4176
Project overview
The Regenerative Agroforestry Project Cameroon is a large-scale Green Earth nature-based initiative on the edges of the Congo Basin, restoring nature, creating forests, and promoting sustainable development through reforestation and agroforestry. The project combines tree planting with regenerative agriculture, integrating food production and long-term landscape recovery on the same hectare.
Native and mixed species are planted across previously-forested land affected by clearing and intensive use. As the canopy develops, the new forest restores habitat that had been lost, provides shade for understorey crops, and stabilises water systems across the project area. Carbon credits represent verified removals over the lifetime of the planted forest.
Local communities are central to the project. Farmers contribute land, labour, and local knowledge, and receive seedlings, training, and a share of the carbon credit revenue.
Community benefits
- Sustainable development: The project promotes long-term economic resilience by transitioning farmers to sustainable agroforestry practices.
- Income diversification: Around 750 farmers will benefit from the sustainable harvesting of cacao products, boosting their annual income.
- Local employment: The initiative generates jobs in nursery operations and ongoing forest monitoring.
Environmental and biodiversity benefits
- Carbon sequestration: This large-scale Congo Basin initiative targets a lifetime emissions reduction of 4 million tonnes of CO₂.
- Ecosystem restoration: By actively promoting reforestation on the edges of the Congo Basin, the project restores native flora and prevents further encroachment into primary forests.
- Soil health: The introduction of agroforestry systems rebuilds deep mineral cycling, enriching the topsoil and supporting sustainable land use.
