Project overview

The Namizimu Afforestation, Reforestation & Agroforestry Carbon Project is a Green Earth initiative restoring forest cover and supporting agroforestry across the Namizimu landscape. The project combines reforestation of degraded land with regenerative agroforestry practices that integrate trees, food crops, and community livelihoods on the same hectare.

The project area sits in a region affected by deforestation and the biodiversity loss that comes with it. Tree planting and assisted natural regeneration restore canopy cover, while agroforestry on smallholder plots supports food security and rural income. The combination addresses both the headline climate outcome and the wider ecosystem health of the landscape.

Local communities are central to the project, with farmers contributing land, labour, and local knowledge, and receiving seedlings, training, and ongoing support. Carbon revenue helps fund the long-term restoration work and the community programmes that make it durable.

Carbon sequestration: Planting 15 million trees across the region will capture an estimated 9.47 million tonnes of CO₂.
Landscape restoration: The project reclaims 27,980 hectares of severely degraded land, re-establishing vital biodiversity corridors.
Hydrological stability: Protecting the Lake Malawi catchment from siltation actively recharges groundwater and reduces severe soil erosion.
