Project overview

The DRC Reforestation Project is a Green Earth initiative aimed at restoring forest cover across degraded land in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The project sits inside the Congo Basin, one of the world's most biologically diverse and climatically important forest systems, where pressure from land conversion, fuel-wood demand, and informal logging has reduced forest cover over recent decades.

The project will plant trees across degraded land and support the assisted natural regeneration of secondary forest, with species selection calibrated to the local ecosystem. As the canopy develops, the new forest sequesters carbon, recovers habitat for the wildlife that depend on intact forest, and helps stabilise local water and soil systems.

Local communities will participate in nursery management, planting, and the long-term protection of restored forest. Carbon revenue funds continued planting, monitoring, and the community programmes that support the restoration. The project is one of our longer-horizon African operations, in a country where forest protection sits at the centre of both global and regional climate ambition.

Community benefits

Substantial job creation: The project will employ local residents in tree planting, nursery maintenance, and conservation activities.

Environmental and biodiversity benefits

Carbon storage: The project targets a lifetime emissions reduction of 5.7 million tonnes of CO₂.
Large-scale ecosystem revival: The initiative focuses on the strategic planting of indigenous species to restore degraded land in a globally significant ecological region.
Biodiversity fortification: Restoring vital forest cover provides a sanctuary for endemic wildlife and halts the loss of critical biodiversity.
