Project overview

The Hongera Energy Efficient Cookstoves Project is one of Green Earth's flagship clean-cooking initiatives in Kenya. The project distributes improved fuel-efficient cookstoves to households in the Mount Kenya region and surrounding districts, replacing traditional three-stone fires that burn larger quantities of wood and produce significant indoor air pollution.

The project is registered under the Gold Standard for Global Goals (ID 12033), with emissions reductions, health outcomes, and forest-protection benefits tracked under a methodology recognised internationally.

Local distribution, training, and follow-up support ensure the stoves stay in use over time, which is the deciding factor in cookstove project integrity. Hongera sits inside our broader cookstove portfolio, alongside our work in Cameroon and Nigeria, and it complements our reforestation work in the same Kenyan region.

Community benefits

Improved health for women and children: The stoves cut down harmful indoor smoke significantly, directly improving respiratory health for women and children, who carry the highest exposure to cooking-smoke pollution in rural Kenyan households.
Cost and time savings: Families save costs and an average of 2 to 3 hours daily on cooking and gathering firewood, achieving a fuel efficiency improvement of up to 70%.
Locally manufactured stoves: The stoves are made locally, supporting employment and skills in the project's supply chain.

Environmental and biodiversity benefits

Reduced deforestation pressure: The efficient stoves cut the firewood each household needs, reducing pressure on the forests around Mount Kenya and the Aberdares.
Lower emissions per household: Cleaner combustion delivers verified emissions reductions on a household-by-household basis under the Gold Standard methodology.
Improved local air quality: Reduced smoke output cuts the particulate matter and black carbon released from traditional cooking fires.
