Canada commits to climate finance with $450 million pledge to Green Climate Fund

In anticipation of the seventh Ministerial on Climate Action (MoCA7), which took place on 13 and 14 July in Bruxelles, Steven Guilbeault, Canadian Minister of Environment and Climate Change, revealed that Canada will provide a substantial contribution of $450 million to the second replenishment of the Green Climate Fund (GCF). This remarkable increase represents a 50% surge from Canada's previous commitment during the GCF's first replenishment in 2019. The GCF, acknowledged as the largest climate change fund globally and a vital financing mechanism of the Paris Agreement, plays an indispensable role in funding groundbreaking initiatives to address the pressing climate crisis.

The forthcoming replenishment of the GCF will enable the fund to continue its vital work, funding projects that align with the Paris Agreement's goals and supporting developing countries in their transition to low-emission, climate-resilient economies. This commitment from Canada sets a positive example and encourages other nations to step up their efforts in combatting the climate crisis.

As the world grapples with increasingly severe environmental emergencies, Canada's substantial contribution demonstrates its determination to play a leading role in the global fight against the climate emergency. By investing in the GCF, Canada showcases its commitment to fostering innovative solutions and driving transformative change to create a more sustainable and resilient future for all.
