Project overview

The Mount Kenya Regenerative Agroforestry Project is a Green Earth initiative in Kenya's central highlands, working with smallholder farmers to restore previously-forested areas affected by logging, agriculture, development, construction, and firewood collection. The project preserves natural resources and safeguards water supply in a vital catchment area through responsible tree planting and careful monitoring.

As the canopy returns, the project recovers carbon, restores soil cover, supports pollinator habitat, and protects the water systems that feed both the local farms and the wider region downstream. Carbon credits issued from the project reflect verified removals as the trees grow, alongside the co-benefits the methodology tracks.

Farmers receive seedlings, technical training, and ongoing agronomy support. Carbon revenue is structured to flow back to participating farmers and the local communities that work the land, with the project designed to keep families on their farms while their land is restored.

Community benefits

Farmer livelihoods: The project creates sustainable livelihood opportunities and provides training to thousands of farmers, targeting over 5,000 farmers.
Yield improvement: By deliberately integrating trees into crop systems, the project lowers soil surface temperatures and increases nutrients, extending the growing period and improving agricultural yields.
Job creation: The initiative provides direct economic benefits to local communities through employment in seedling nurseries and land management.

Environmental and biodiversity benefits

Carbon sequestration: The project targets a lifetime emissions reduction of 5 million tonnes of CO₂ through large-scale reforestation and agroforestry.
Landscape restoration: The initiative aims to restore up to 15,000 hectares of degraded land across crucial catchment areas in Mt Kenya and the Aberdares.
Water security: Replanting native trees in these critical catchment zones actively safeguards the regional water supply and prevents further soil degradation.
