Green Earth partners with Africa Carbon Solutions and CORENA for reforestation programme in Senegal

Green Earth Group N.V. ("Green Earth" or "the Group") (Euronext: EARTH, NL0009169515), a leading end-to-end project developer of nature-based solutions, announces a partnership to develop the ReGen Boundou programme, a large-scale afforestation, reforestation, and revegetation (ARR) project in the Boundou Community Nature Reserve (RNCB) in eastern Senegal. Developed in partnership with Africa Carbon Solutions (ACS) and the Conservatoire de la Réserve Naturelle Communautaire du Boundou (CORENA), the programme targets the degraded Sahelian landscape for ecological restoration.

The ReGen Boundou programme is being developed under the VERRA Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) using methodology VM0047, which governs ARR projects using native species. Over a 40-year crediting period, the programme is expected to sequester approximately 7 million tonnes of CO₂, while generating measurable biodiversity, livelihood, and water security co-benefits for the communities of the Boundou region.

About the programme region

The Boundou Community Nature Reserve covers 120,000 hectares in the Tambacounda region of eastern Senegal — one of the Sahel's most ecologically significant landscapes, historically rich in savannah woodland and gallery forest. Decades of agricultural pressure, overgrazing, and climate stress have degraded large portions of the reserve, reducing vegetation cover, soil fertility, and water retention across the region.

ReGen Boundou aims to restore approximately 26,000 hectares across six distinct ecosystems: acacia, baobab, and gallery forest, community agroforestry plots, food forests, and heritage woodland. Planting activities will use exclusively native species selected for ecological fit and long-term resilience, with approximately 25 million trees established over an 8-year planting programme.

The programme is designed as a holistic landscape restoration programme, delivering environmental co-benefits through biodiversity restoration while generating lasting social and economic benefits for local communities by improving livelihoods, creating employment, and strengthening climate resilience.

Community governance

ReGen Boundou is structured as a community-led conservation programme. CORENA, the legally recognised management body for the reserve, holds governance authority over the land and plays a central role in programme design, implementation oversight, and benefit distribution. CORENA’s governance model has been recognised as a best-practice approach to protected area management and benefits from the support of international partners, including the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) will be secured with all 20 communities within the reserve before any implementation activity begins.

Communities will be directly employed as nursery operators, ecogards, planting teams, and field monitors throughout the programme lifetime, creating sustained local livelihoods tied to the health of the restored ecosystem.

Expanding to Senegal is a natural step: a mature carbon market, a government that supports high-integrity projects, and partners who know the land. Our agroforestry model from East Africa fits Boundou well, and it puts the communities who restore the landscape at the centre.

Selwyn Duijvestijn, Green Earth CEO

Africa Carbon Solutions is committed to supporting Africa’s ecological transition and biodiversity restoration objectives. We are proud to partner with the Conservatoire de la Réserve Naturelle Communautaire du Boundou (CORENA) and Green Earth, who share our ambition to develop a high-quality, large-scale reforestation and biodiversity restoration projects through a holistic approach combining environmental impact, ecosystem restoration, and tangible benefits for local communities.

Roman Bourgeais, Project Director at ACS

Since its creation, CORENA has been working alongside local communities to preserve the unique natural heritage of the Boundou Nature Reserve and has gained extensive experience collaborating with international partners.

We are pleased to be a partner of this large-scale restoration program with Africa Carbon Solutions and Green Earth. As part of the Reserve’s Management Plan, this initiative brings our long-term vision for ecosystem restoration to life, while delivering tangible, sustainable, and shared benefits to local communities.

Abdou Diouf, Conservator of the Boundou Community Nature Reserve

Programme design

The programme’s operation is being designed by Africa Carbon Solutions, with the support of independent experts in biodiversity restoration, hydrology, and environmental impact assessment. A pre-eligibility assessment conducted by EP Carbon in early 2025 confirmed land eligibility and assessed the ARR methodology approach across all restoration zones.

Green Earth is responsible for overall project coordination, including the project design phase, the development of the Project Design Document (PDD) required for VERRA VCS registration, project financing structuring, and coordination of independent validation. Africa Carbon Solutions serves as programme coordinator, with CORENA providing on-the-ground community and land governance.

The programme is currently in its design phase. VERRA registration is targeted following completion of baseline studies, FPIC consultations, and independent validation.

About the Conservatoire de la Réserve Naturelle Communautaire du Boundou (CORENA)

CORENA is a Senegalese community association that manages the Boundou Community Nature Reserve, a protected area of roughly 120,000 hectares in eastern Senegal. Established in 2009 through a decentralised cooperation between France's Isère Department and the former Tambacounda Regional Council, it is governed by the mayors of the four communes the reserve spans (Dougué, Sinthiou Fissa, Koussan and Toumboura) and takes its name from the Pulaar for "here it is protected." CORENA delivers the reserve's management plan, pairing environmental preservation — ecological monitoring, reforestation, environmental education and species protection — with local economic development such as water access, agroecology training, women's local-product processing, and community ecotourism, aiming to safeguard the Boundou's biodiversity while improving local livelihoods.
