JetBlue

JetBlue is the first US airline that achieved carbon neutrality for all of its domestic flights. JetBlue is an industry leader in mitigating climate risk and aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

An Industry Leader

In July 2020, JetBlue announced its plans to begin offsetting carbon dioxide emissions from jet fuel from its domestic flights. At the time of implementing this initiative, the airline estimated it would offset 15-17 billion pounds of emissions, equivalent to removing over 1.5 million vehicles from the road annually.

The airline has also begun to use sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) on flights from San Francisco International Airport. In July 2021, the airline extended its use of SAF to Los Angeles International Airport by partnering with World Energy and World Fuel Services. World Energy’s SAF is made from inedible agricultural waste and is certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials to reduce emissions by up to 80% per gallon before it is blended with petroleum jet fuel. The fact that LAX is one of JetBlue’s busiest domestic markets represents the airline’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint. The airline is aiming to operate 40 daily flights from LAX this summer, with plans to reach 70 daily flights from LAX by 2025.

JetBlue also engages in numerous projects that aim to offset the airline’s carbon emissions. The company engages in forest conservation projects that aim to prevent deforestation. These projects help forego plans that would have converted forests for other purposes, reducing carbon emissions. The company also engages in Landfill Gas Capture (LFG) by capturing landfill gas and converting it into a renewable energy resource. JetBlue is also invested in solar and wind as renewable energy resources, as they contribute to the development of both solar and wind farms.

Flying To An Eco-Friendly Future

JetBlue aims to further improve its carbon footprint. The company aims to reduce aircraft emissions by 25% per available seat mile by 2030 from its 2015 levels. JetBlue also aims to transition 10% of its total jet fuel use to blended SAF by 2030.

JetBlue is a pioneer in the US aviation industry and is setting an example to other airlines of approaches they should take to reduce their carbon footprint. JetBlue’s goals reflect its continuing effort to revolutionise the airline industry and make a real difference in environmental practices in the airline industry.
