India launches Article 6 carbon credit marketplace

The Carbon Markets Association of India (CMAI) has launched a marketplace for Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. The platform gives organisations a single point of access for participating in international carbon markets.

CMAI named the platform the 'Article 6 Carbon Bazaar'. The bazaar brings together Indian project developers, private and public buyers, investors, technology providers, carbon market service providers, and environmental financiers. By connecting these groups within a single platform, CMAI aims to streamline Article 6 project development across India's carbon market.

Article 6 of the Paris Agreement sets out rules for countries to cooperate on carbon credit trading across borders. It allows nations to transfer carbon credits between each other, supporting national environmental targets and directing investment toward emission-reduction and removal projects.

CMAI announced the bazaar during a webinar covering the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM), a bilateral agreement between India and Japan for carbon credit cooperation. The webinar set out how the bazaar can support JCM project activity alongside India's wider Article 6 ambitions.

The bazaar operates as a facilitation platform for Article 6 activity. Services include buyer-seller matchmaking, project preparation, investment support, monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV), and carbon credit transfer.

The platform helps prepare projects for authorisation by national governments, a required step for Article 6 credits to count toward international transfers. It aggregates small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) projects into larger ones, making participation more accessible for smaller developers.

CMAI also plans to use the bazaar to train Indian industry on Article 6 project development. The platform supports participants through transaction processes and ongoing MRV requirements throughout a project's lifetime.

The bazaar supports JCM-related activity between India and Japan. It also facilitates broader Article 6 cooperation between India and other countries, widening the pool of potential carbon market partners.
