Local consultations strengthen readiness for clean cooking in Nigeria

In late January, in Niger and Nasarawa State in Nigeria, Green Earth convened stakeholder consultation meetings for the Sauki Cookstove Project as part of preparations for the distribution phase. The engagements brought together 62 participants across both states, including the Green Earth project team, the Roshan Renewable Technology project team, state-level and national-level representatives, community heads and traditional rulers, women leaders, youth representatives, religious leaders, household representatives, and local partner organisations.

The purpose of the meetings was to introduce the project formally, outline its objectives and implementation framework, and present the proposed distribution and monitoring approach. The consultations also created space for open dialogue to ensure that community perspectives were incorporated prior to rollout.

A key area of feedback concerned stove size suitability for larger households and varying cooking needs. Stakeholders emphasised the importance of ensuring that allocation reflects household structure and daily cooking realities. The project team confirmed that household assessments will inform distribution and that additional stoves will be allocated where appropriate based on verified household composition. Addressing this feedback at the consultation stage strengthened confidence in the process and improved readiness for rollout.

Community and traditional leaders across both states welcomed the initiative and expressed readiness for implementation to begin. As one leader stated, ‘We are ready for this project to begin. Our women will benefit greatly from cleaner and safer cooking solutions.’

These consultations engaged two states and multiple stakeholder groups, secured clear leadership endorsement, and captured key implementation feedback before distribution begins. The process reinforces an inclusive implementation approach designed to support strong adoption and long-term sustainability.
