High seas treaty: The UN secured a deal to protect international waters

High seas treaty The UN secured a deal to protect international waters

After 10 years of negotiation, UN member states secured an agreement to protect the waters at the UN's New York headquarters.

The 30×30 pledge made by countries at the COP15 biodiversity summit in 2022 will be put into effect largely thanks to the high seas treaty. By 2030, the countries are committed to protecting a third of the world's oceans and land.

The UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, the most recent international convention on ocean preservation, was signed in 1982. This law laid out a comprehensive regime of law and order throughout the world's oceans and seas.

Under the new deal, these marine protected areas will establish restrictions on what may be fished on shipping line paths and exploration activities like deep-sea mining.

To formally adopt the wording of the high seas treaty deal, countries will need to convene once more, and there will be much work to be done before the deal is put into effect.

Marine life hosts 80% of the planet's biodiversity and constitutes the largest ecosystem on Earth. A quarter of all the carbon dioxide that humans release into the atmosphere is absorbed by the oceans, which also govern climate.

DGB Group manages large-scale projects with a focus on biodiversity, carbon offsets, and nature conservation. DGB's projects are developed in accordance with the highest verification standards to help biodiversity flourish.
