Waysis: building smarter cities through sustainable mobility

In a world where urbanisation and environmental pressures collide, Waysis stands out as a company dedicated to balance. As a leading provider of smart mobility solutions in the Netherlands, Waysis operates across both the business-to-business and business-to-government sectors, supporting municipalities, institutions, and companies alike.

At the heart of Waysis is a team of experts—technicians, engineers, and traffic specialists—assembled to meet the unique needs of each project. Through its operating companies, including market leaders like Taxameter Centrale (TMC), Brickyard, and XPOTS, Waysis covers the full spectrum of parking, enforcement, city access, and traffic engineering solutions. Their mission? To improve mobility, enhance public space use, and deliver smarter urban environments, all while staying true to a deeply embedded commitment to sustainability.

From ISO-certified operations and socially responsible employment practices to sustainable procurement and fleet electrification, Waysis demonstrates that innovation and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand.

What does sustainability look like in action? Read our exclusive interview with Waysis, where it shares how it integrates environmental responsibility into mobility innovation, and why partnering with DGB Group plays a central role in its strategy.

1. Can you tell us more about Waysis and why sustainability is important to your company?

At Waysis, we specialise in smart mobility solutions that improve traffic flow, parking management, and sustainable urban development. Our group comprises leading brands in the Netherlands like Taxameter Centrale (TMC), Brickyard, and XPOTS, all committed to creating smarter, cleaner cities.

Sustainability is deeply embedded in our values because our work directly impacts how people move, park, and interact with public space. With urbanisation and climate change accelerating, we see it as our duty to contribute to healthier cities, reducing congestion, emissions, and our own ecological footprint. We believe technology must serve both efficiency and environmental responsibility.

2. What sustainability targets have you set, and how are you working towards achieving these sustainability targets?

Our group has committed to reducing its carbon footprint across all operations. Key targets include:

  • Achieving maximum reduced CO₂ emissions for its internal operations by 2030.
  • Integrating energy-efficient hardware into all new installations and retrofits.
  • Minimising travel-related emissions by prioritising remote solutions and electric vehicle fleets.
  • Increasing the use of recycled materials and sustainable procurement practices.

To achieve this, we are conducting annual environmental audits in line with the ISO 14001, optimising our supply chains, and involving employees in green initiatives, from waste reduction campaigns to sustainable mobility programmes.

3. What motivated Waysis to calculate and compensate for its carbon footprint with DGB Group?

We believe that real change starts with transparency and accountability. Calculating our carbon footprint allows us to understand where we have the biggest impact and where we can improve.

We partnered with DGB Group because of its expertise in nature-based solutions and its reputation for high-integrity carbon projects. For us, offsetting is not a substitute for emissions reduction but a complementary action while we work on long-term structural changes. It reflects our commitment to climate action today, not just tomorrow.

4. What were your key considerations when selecting the Hongera Reforestation Project and the Hongera Energy Efficient Cookstoves Project for your carbon compensation?

We wanted projects that deliver measurable environmental impact and social value. The Hongera Reforestation Project restores degraded land, protects biodiversity, and absorbs CO₂, supporting long-term ecosystem health.

The Hongera Energy Efficient Cookstoves Project addresses another critical issue: household air pollution. By improving cookstove efficiency, the project reduces emissions, improves public health, and lowers fuel consumption, particularly benefiting women and children.

These projects resonate with our belief that sustainability must be inclusive, equitable, and community-centred.

5. How does this initiative align with Waysis’ broader sustainability goals and values?

Our sustainability strategy is built around three pillars: climate responsibility, technological innovation, and urban wellbeing. Partnering with DGB Group aligns seamlessly with this vision.

These initiatives help us make immediate positive contributions to the climate while we continue to innovate towards greener mobility systems. Moreover, they reflect our value of ‘creating impact beyond our own boundaries’, supporting global efforts in regions that need it most.

6. What message would you like to share with other businesses considering similar actions?

Start now. Measuring and compensating your carbon footprint is not only possible, but also essential. It’s a strong signal to your stakeholders that you’re serious about sustainability. No company is too small or too late to make a difference.

We also encourage others to look beyond just the numbers. Choose partners and projects that align with your values, create long-term impact, and uplift communities. Sustainability is not just about compliance; it’s about leadership, trust, and responsibility.

DGB Group’s Hongera projects: channelling nature for verified carbon offsets

The Hongera Energy Efficient Cookstoves Project in Kenya, developed by DGB Group and selected by Waysis, delivers a profound environmental and social impact. The project distributes energy-efficient cookstoves to rural households, drastically reducing the amount of firewood needed for daily cooking.

This innovation reduces harmful indoor air pollution—one of the leading causes of respiratory illness in low-income regions—and significantly cuts carbon emissions. The stoves are designed to retain heat more effectively, which lowers fuel consumption, protects local forests from deforestation, and frees up time (especially for women and children) that would otherwise be spent collecting firewood.

This project directly contributes to environmental goals by cutting emissions through efficient technology, while simultaneously advancing public health, gender equity, and economic development. By reducing household air pollution and lowering fuel needs, it improves daily living conditions—particularly for women and children—while supporting job creation and community resilience.

The Hongera Reforestation Project in Kenya restores degraded landscapes through large-scale agroforestry, aiming to plant over 10 million trees across vital watershed areas around Mt Kenya and the Aberdares. Using a mix of indigenous and productive tree species, the project enhances biodiversity, improves water security, and sequesters millions of tonnes of CO₂ over its lifetime. Local farmers play a central role, receiving training, seedlings, and employment, which fosters sustainable land use and new income opportunities. With rigorous monitoring and certification under Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard, this project delivers measurable environmental impact alongside tangible community benefits.

As part of DGB’s broader portfolio of nature-based solutions, the Hongera projects exemplify how environmental action can drive socio-economic progress. Across regions like Uganda, Cameroon, and Kenya, DGB’s initiatives restore ecosystems and unlock new income streams, creating long-term opportunities for the communities who depend on these landscapes.

Carbon compensation goes beyond accounting—it drives meaningful impact. By supporting high-integrity projects like Hongera, companies such as Waysis invest in practical solutions that regenerate ecosystems, protect public health, and strengthen the resilience of communities most vulnerable to environmental challenges. This approach turns climate responsibility into measurable, lasting progress.

While reducing emissions remains the ultimate goal, carbon compensation enables companies to take meaningful action today—going beyond just emissions. It’s a tool of leadership, a bridge towards net-zero goals, and a testament to how business can be a force for good.

As Waysis demonstrates, when sustainability is woven into the fabric of a company’s operations and values, it generates a ripple effect beyond just business benefits, creating healthier cities, empowered communities, and a better future for all. Your business can be a part of this revolution too, starting today.
